Welke JAK-remmers zijn er?
Op dit moment zijn er twee beschikbare JAK-remmers voor reumatoïde artritis op de Belgische markt: Baricitinib (Olumiant®) en Tofacitinib (Xeljanz®). We verwachten dat deze middelen binnen afzienbare tijd ook tegen andere (reumatische) aandoeningen ingezet zullen worden.
Welke medicijnen heeft Galapagos?
Het nieuwe reumamedicijn filgotinib van Galapagos is met vlag en wimpel voor de laatste test geslaagd. Dat betekent dat dit Nederlands-Belgisch biotechbedrijf nu toestemming aan het Europese Geneesmiddelen Agentschap (EMA) kan vragen om het geneesmiddel filgotinib op te markt te brengen.
Wat doen JAK-remmers?
JAK-remmers zijn immunosuppressiva en remmen de enzymen die de signaaltransductie verzorgen nadat cytokines aan cytokine receptoren binden. Dit remt het effect van de verhoogde pro-inflammatoire cytokine productie en vermindert hiermee de ontsteking en andere symptomen van RA.

Xeljanz is a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor and Humira is a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker. Side effects of Xeljanz and Humira that are similar include headache and stuffy nose. Side effects of Xeljanz that are different from Humira include upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhea, and cold symptoms such as sore throat and runny nose.
Can Xeljanz be taken by mouth?
Unlike Humira, Enbrel, and other injectable biologics, JAK inhibitors like Xeljanz can be taken by mouth. Xeljanz is available as an immediate-release (IR) tablet that you’ll take twice a day, as well as an extended-release (XR) tablet that only needs to be taken once daily.
