Jom Kipoer wordt gevierd in de synagoge. Joden steken dan een kaars op die gedurende het feest niet gedoofd wordt. Er wordt 25 uur gebeden en gevast. Dat betekent dat joden zich onthouden van werken, eten, drinken, baden, geslachtsgemeenschap en het dragen van juwelen en leren schoenen.
