Een veel gebruikte definitie is dat sciencefiction gaat over zaken die in het heden onwaarschijnlijk zijn, maar mogelijk ergens in de toekomst plaats kunnen vinden in de echte wereld, terwijl science fantasy zaken omvat waarvan zeker is dat ze helemaal nooit plaats kunnen vinden in de echte wereld.

Space Opera in this sense has declined (in written SF, anyway) and is no longer a big part of the field. The term “space opera” has changed to mean something very similar to “hard science fiction” when it takes place in space. It was (deservedly) pejorative.

Wat maakt een tekst literair?
Literatuur zijn teksten waarvan men vindt dat ze meer waarde hebben dan ‘gewone’ teksten. Het gaat dus om bijzonder knappe gedichten, verhalen, toneelstukken of andere teksten die als kunstwerken beschouwd worden. Reisgidsen, kookboeken en knutselboeken zijn dus geen literatuur.
