De infanterie zijn de militairen die te voet vechten. Synoniemen zijn voetvolk en grondtroepen. De infanterie, de cavalerie en de artillerie zijn de belangrijkste onderdelen van klassieke legers. De infanterie kan op verschillende manieren op het slagveld arriveren.

Taken in Nederland De landmacht verdedigt het Nederlandse grondgebied. Tegen vijandige landen, maar ook tegen aanvallen van groeperingen op bijvoorbeeld Nederlandse burgers of vitale objecten als (kern)energiecentrales, drinkwatervoorzieningen en computersystemen. De landmacht ondersteunt overheidsinstanties.
Is Luchtmobiele Brigade special forces?
Zij zijn hiervoor speciaal georganiseerd, getraind en uitgerust en zijn onderdeel van de organisatie. Daarnaast zijn er ‘designated enablers’. Die behoren niet tot de SOF, maar kunnen wel ondersteunen. Het gaat met name om eenheden van 11 Luchtmobiele Brigade en het Korps Mariniers.
