Het begrip is een samenstelling van eunḗ (bed) en ókhos (houder) en betekent bedbewaker, kamerheer of kamerling. Andere synoniemen voor eunuch zijn: gecastreerde harembewaker, castraat, gesnedene, ontmande of geabelardiseerde bewaker.
