What is eclampsia and what causes it?
Eclampsia is a disorder of pregnancy characterized by seizures in the setting of pre-eclampsia. Typically the pregnant woman develops hypertension and proteinuria before the onset of a convulsion (seizure).
Can eclampsia kill you?
While eclampsia can be fatal if untreated, it is very rare for pregnant women to die from the condition in developed countries. Globally, eclampsia accounts for approximately 14 percent of maternal deaths. In the majority of cases, preeclampsia symptoms are mild and do not require any intervention other than monitoring and possibly diet change.
What is the difference between preeclampsia and eclampsia?
Eclampsia follows preeclampsia, which is a high blood pressure disorder during pregnancy. Eclampsia is a condition that only occurs during pregnancy and causes seizures, usually late in the pregnancy. It is a rare condition, affecting 1 in every 2,000-3,000 pregnancies every year.
What are the complications of pre eclampsia?
Eclampsia. Following the seizure there is typically either a period of confusion or coma. Complications include aspiration pneumonia, cerebral hemorrhage, kidney failure, and cardiac arrest. Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are part of a larger group of conditions known as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
